Butterflies

I was making a Thinking of You card for a friend and decided to enter the Mod Squad Challenge - Feeling Bookish. We need to use a page from a book, magazine, or anything that has writing on it. I used a piece from a newspaper page.

I wanted the butterflies to look like monarchs, so I knew I had to use orange and black on the two layer stamp, but the part that is orange is the detail stamp and the black part is the solid background. So if I stamped the black background first, the orange wouldn't show up. I stamped the orange part first, and heat embossed it with clear embossing powder. Then I stamped over it with a water based black ink. The ink didn't stick to the embossed areas, so I was able to wipe it off. I had a bit of smudging, and there were a few spots where I had stray embossed areas, so I filled them in with a black marker. They show up a bit shiny in the picture.

It's hard to tell in the picture, but I blended some Warm Cocoa and Tangerine Twist ink on the piece of  newspaper before I attached it to the black layer.

I used a scalloped die to cut the edge off the front. I didn't have any Tangerine Twist cardstock, so I blended Tangerine Twist ink onto a strip of white cardstock before I added it to the edge of the inside of the card.

I used the following supplies:

Gina K. Designs: Butterfly Kisses Stamp n Foil set
                             Warm Cocoa, Tangerine Twist ink
Jet Black Amalgam Ink, for the sentiment
                            White, Black cardstock
Sizzix scalloped edge die
Recollections Planner Accessories die
Memento Tuxedo Black ink, for the butterfly
clear embossing powder, black marker

Happy Mother's Day

Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers! We're in lockdown right now, so I can't visit with my mother, but I can still take her supper and a homemade card. She loves the autumn colours, so I made her card with brown, orange and yellow.

I used two challenges for my inspiration: Gina K. Designs Monthly Mix challenge, where we have to use a stencil, and the Mod Squad challenge, where we have to use a page from a book, magazine, newspaper, or anything that has writing.

For the background, I used the Sassy Stripes stencil on a white card base, and inked through it twice with Warm Cocoa, once in each direction, to make the gingham background.

I used a piece of newspaper and applied Warm Cocoa ink with a blending brush. Then I crumpled up the paper a couple of times and smoothed it out a bit. This leaves creases and raised parts on the paper. I ran the Warm Cocoa inkpad directly on the paper and it only left ink on the raised parts. I also did this with the Sweet Mango inkpad. Then I wrapped the paper around a toilet paper tube, which I had flattened and trimmed to fit, and used Connect Glue to attach it. This gave me a container for my flowers.

I used the Dazzling Dahlia stamp set and coordinating dies for the flowers and leaves. I stamped them with Wild Dandelion, Sweet Corn, Sweet Mango, Tangerine Twist, Fresh Asparagus, and Jelly Bean Green ink. The sentiment is from the Holiday Frame Fillers stamp set and is stamped with Sweet Mango ink. I adhered everything together with Connect Glue.

The stencil, cardstock, stamps, dies and ink are from Gina K. Designs.

Stencil Shadow

I needed to make an Anniversary card, so I looked at the Gina K. Designs Monthly Mix Challenge. We are asked to use a flower stencil to make the background, or if we don't have a flower stencil we can use any Gina K. Designs stencil. I don't have a flower stencil, so I used a different one.

I used the Gina K. Designs (GKD) Harvest Flourish stencil with some white pigment ink on a piece of GKD Kraft cardstock. Once that dried, I shifted the stencil slightly and used GKD Fresh Asparagus ink. I think it gives the effect of being embossed. I matted that with GKD Fresh Asparagus cardstock and added it to a white card base.

I wanted to add some flowers, so I used the GKD Electro Pop Flowers stamp set and coordinating dies, using GKD Fresh Asparagus, Dusty Rose, Red Velvet, and Grass Green ink .

The sentiment is from the GKD Rose Peonies stamp set, and is stamped in Dusty Rose. I used some oval dies to cut out the sentiment and the Fresh Asparagus layer.

May Scor-Pal More Than One Score

It's time for another Scor-Pal More Than One Score Challenge. For the month of May, the theme is Purses or Handbags, or you can make an Anything Goes project as long as it follows the general rules.

Each month we will have a different theme and you will have a month to create and enter your projects. As well as the theme you will need to make "More Than One Score" and tell us where you used the Scor-Pal on your project. So a single fold card won't count but an Easel, Gatefold, Stair Step, etc, will :) Also we love to see your "Anything But a Card" projects, just as long as you make "More Than One Score".

There are lots of tutorials on the Scor-Pal website. I found one for the clutch purse I made. You can find it Here.

To make this Clutch Purse, you will need:
11" x 12" piece of patterned paper (If you use double sided paper, it will be pretty on the inside, too!)
I used Stampin’ Up! Melon Mambo from the Brights Designer Series Paper Stack

Embellishments to decorate. I used:
Stampin’ Up!: Melon Mambo cardstock
                       Cherry Cobbler ink
VersaMark ink
clear embossing powder
Hampton Art stamp set SC0646 for the sentiment on the handle
Dies: Sizzix edger
         Spellbinders Shapeabilities Jar Labels
Spellbinders Shapeabilities Die D-Lites Blooms Four, Corner Flourish
Mini Glue Dots
piece of yellow cardstock
ribbon
pieces of a magnetic sheet for the closure

I followed the directions in the tutorial, but made this template just so I knew what I was doing! I hope you find it helpful. Dotted lines indicate where to score, and solid lines are cutting lines.

The Scor-Pal has a useful feature that came in handy for this project. On the 3", 6" and 9" scoring grooves, it has marks along each side. This makes it easy to stay lined up in the same groove when you are scoring the diagonal lines on the side tabs. The top corner of the tab is lined up on the 3" mark, and you can see that the bottom corner is lined up in the same groove.

Here is a look at the purse before it is assembled.

I used an edger die to cut the front edge, and used the same die for the small piece that I added on the back. This hid where I attached the ribbon handle.

Here's a view showing the side. You just pinch the top of each side together and close down the front. I added a piece of a magnetic sheet to the back of the front, and inside on the front panel.

This was a lot of fun to make, and I hope you have a look at the website and try one of the tutorials. If you do, be sure to enter the challenge, and you could win a gift certificate to the Scor-Pal store!
