More Falling Leaves

I needed a birthday card for a friend, so I decided to make a slimline card with the leaves falling down the card.

I made the card base and the top layer with Accent Opaque Digital 120 pound Cover Smooth cardstock. Using my MISTI, I stamped the sentiment with Gina K. Designs Warm Cocoa ink, cleaned the stamps and restamped with VersaMark ink and heat embossed in clear. Since I didn't move the stamps, they stamped in exactly the same place the second time.

I also used my MISTI to stamp the leaves in Gina K. Designs Whisper Amalgam ink. The leaves and sentiment are all from the Gina K. Designs The Best Flowers stamp set. I coloured part of each leaf with some Laurentien coloured pencils, and then blended it to the rest of the leaf with Odorless Mineral Spirits and a paper blending stump. I shaded under each leaf with Spectrum Noir alcohol marker BG2. The front panel was layered onto some Gold Foil cardstock and then on to the card base.

I am entering this in a few challenges:

The storm earlier this week wasn't as bad as predicted, so we didn't get many leaves down. They will have time to change to their pretty colours before they fall, now!

Scor-Pal Pinspired

This project was inspired by a project on the Scor-Pal Pinterest board by Gini Cagle. It's a cute box that opens up to reveal 3 trays.

This box was my inspiration:

To make this box, you will need:

One 6" x 9" piece of cardstock (I used Accent Opaque Digital Cover Smooth 120 lb. White cardstock)
One 6" x 11" piece of cardstock (I used White, as above)
Three 4 5/8" squares of cardstock for the trays (I used White, as above)

You can then cover and decorate your box as you like. These are the pieces you need to make one like mine:

Five 3" squares of cardstock (I used Green Bazzill Basics Paper cardstock)
Six 3/4" x 3" pieces of cardstock for the edges of the trays (I used Green cardstock, as above)
Three 2 7/8" squares of complementary coloured cardstock (I used some pale yellow cardstock)
Three 2 3/4" squares of patterned paper (I used Crate Paper Oh Darling paper)

Embellishments for the three decorated sides (I used the dragonfly from the Gina K. Designs Follow Your Dreams stamp set by Theresa Momber; Spellbinders Nestibilities Big Scalloped Ovals Small die and Spectrum Noir alcohol markers MG3, BT5, AG2, IG5)

There is a great tutorial by Heather on Splitcoaststampers with a video (actually 4 videos!). I'll describe it here, but if anything is unclear, check out her step by step instructions.

Start with the piece of 6" x 9" cardstock and score at 3" and 6" on the long side, and 3" on the short side. Referring to the picture below, score on the diagonals in the two top edge squares. Score again 1" away from the diagonal score lines and trim the corners off. Cut up from the bottom on the bottom left square, and cut along the diagonal in the bottom middle square. Finally, create the tab in the bottom right square. It is 3/4" wide. Crease all score lines and set aside.

Next, take the 6" x 11" piece. Score at 3", 6" and 9" along the long side and at 3" on the short side. Score along the diagonals of the top edge squares like before, trimming off 1" past the diagonals. Cut up from the bottom of the 6" score line, trim off the diagonal to the left of the cut you just made, and create the 3/4" tab on the bottom left square. The flap on the bottom right will be used to attach the two sides of the box together. Crease all score lines.

Adhere Scor-Tape to the inside of the two diagonal flaps at the top of each piece.

  • Remove the backing and fold the flaps in to adhere the tape. Add Scor-Tape to the bottom of the triangular flaps and the 3/4" tabs.

Remove the backing paper and attach the triangular flap to the bottom square to create the first corner. Then attach the tab to create the second corner. This is one half of the box. Repeat with the other piece.

Attach the two sides together, placing the flap on the back of the other half.

Score at 7/8" on each side of the three 4 5/8" squares. These will be the three trays. Cut from the bottom of the score lines on one side up to the perpendicular score line. Repeat on the opposite side. Trim the corners slightly to give a better fit when you fold it into the tray.

Add Scor-Tape to the corner flaps and adhere to the inside. Repeat for all three trays.

Attach the 3/4" x 3" strips of cardstock along two sides of each of the trays. Trim slightly, if necessary.

Attach a tray at the top and bottom of the left side of the box. On the right side of the box, on the inside, make a mark at 1 7/8" from the top, along the side and back. Attach the third tray with the bottom of the tray along the mark you made. I held it in place to make sure it would fit before I attached it with the Scor-Tape!

Tape your five 3" squares of cardstock to all the sides except the bottom. Add your three 2 7/8" squares to the top and to the right and left sides of where the box opens. Add your patterned paper on top and embellish as desired.

There is still time to enter this month's challenge on the Scor-Pal blog. This month, the theme is School or Storage, or you can make an Anything Goes project, as long as it has More Than One Score and follows the general rules. You could win a $25 gift certificate to the Scor-Pal store!

Falling Leaves

This is one of those cards that turn out completely different than the picture in your head! Even though the leaves haven't turned colour around here, they will be falling off the trees, as post tropical storm Teddy is hitting us tonight.

I had a vision in my head of stamping the leaves, embossing them in clear and then adding ink over them. I think the Skeleton Leaves stamp set by Gina K. Designs (GKD) that I used wasn't the right choice for my vision. (I also used stamps from the GKD Autumn Wreath Builder and Give Thanks sets.) So once I added the ink (GKD Red Hot, Tomato Soup, Honey Mustard, Sweet Corn, Fresh Asparagus and Warm Cocoa) it didn't look like what I expected.

I used a VersaMark pen to colour over all the leaves and acorns, added clear embossing powder and heat set it again. This locked the colour under the embossed areas. Then I added Warm Cocoa over the whole card, concentrating on the background. I used a piece of paper towel to rub any ink off the leaves.

The sentiment came from the Autumn Wreath Builder and was cut out with a Cottage Cutz Stitched Circle die and heat embossed in gold. I layered the panel with GKD Coral Reef cardstock and attached it to a white card base.

My MISTI came in handy for arranging and stamping the leaves, and for lining up the sentiment and border on my die cut circle.

Even though it didn't turn out as planned, I am happy with the result!

I am entering this in the following challenges:

Fall Foliage

There are several challenges that call for Fall cards, and since I needed to make a card, I made a Fall card. I will be entering the following challenges:
Mod Squad Challenge - Autumn Foliage
Gina K. Designs Monthly Mix Challenge - Fall is almost here
Splitcoaststampers MISTI Monday challenge - Autumn themed project

I used my MISTI to help me mask off the rectangle on a piece of Gina K. Designs (GKD) White cardstock with some washi tape. Then I added the colours with a blending brush using GKD Red Hot, Tomato Soup, Sweet Corn, Fresh Asparagus, and Warm Cocoa ink.

I peeled off the washi tape and made sure the ink was dry before moving on to the next step. I placed the cardstock into my MISTI, stamped the leaves, from the GKD Skeleton Leaves stamp set, and the sentiment, from the GKD Autumn Wreath Builder stamp set, with GKD Dark Chocolate ink. I then cleaned off the stamps, but did not remove the stamps from my MISTI. I inked the stamps with VersaMark ink and heat embossed them in clear.

I added the panel to a GKD Coral Reef card base. Even though I didn't use Coral Reef ink, I thought it matched quite well.

Some of the leaves are starting to turn colour here, especially away from the city. I always look forward to the beautiful display that the trees give us!

Foiled Stencil Card

I decided to make one more card for the Mod Squad Challenge - Step Up Your Stencil

All of the supplies are from Gina K. Designs, unless otherwise specified.

I used the Ornamental Fans stencil and spread Deco Foil Transfer Gel Duo through it. I removed the stencil and washed it right away, so the gel wouldn't dry on it. Once the stenciled image was dry (it turns clear when it is dry), I foiled it with Sweet Mango foil by running it through my laminator. I also could have run it through my die cutting machine, where the pressure would have adhered the foil, but I needed my laminator for the sentiment, so I used that.

Speaking of the sentiment, it is a foilable image sheet that came in one of Gina's kits a while ago. I used a Cottage Cutz Stitched Circle die to cut out the image, and foiled it with Sweet Mango foil.

I matted both the sentiment and the background layer with Sweet Mango cardstock and attached them to a white card base.

The picture above doesn't capture the shine of the foil, so I took another one. It shows the shine, but doesn't show the true colour of the white cardstock! I find it really hard to get a good picture of foiled images.

Fall colours

I decided to make another card for the Gina K. Designs Monthly Mix challenge - Fall is Almost Here and the Mod Squad Challenge - Step Up Your Stencil

I started with a white card base and the Gina K. Designs (GKD) Mandala Burst stencil. Using a blending brush, I added GKD Sweet Corn, Tomato Soup, Red Hot, Fresh Asparagus, and Warm Cocoa ink. I removed the stencil, cleaned it and then lined it up over the image again. I used a VersaMark ink pad to add the ink right over the coloured image. After removing the stencil, I added clear embossing powder and heat set it.

I added GKD Sweet Corn ink over the entire image and then wiped over the embossed parts to remove any ink that was there.

I stamped the sentiment, from the GKD Natural Silhouettes stamp set, with VersaMark ink on a piece of GKD Fresh Asparagus cardstock. I added gold embossing powder and heat set it. I used some foam squares to add the sentiment strip.

It is starting to feel a bit like Fall, here. The days are a little cooler and sometimes I need a jacket! A few of the leaves are starting to turn, which is my favourite part of Fall.

Embellished Stencil

September is a busy month for birthdays in my family. I made this card for my nephew and had to wait to post it until after I gave it to him! It satisfies a few challenges that I am entering: Gina K. Designs Monthly Mix challenge - Fall is Almost Here (use fall colours); Mod Squad Challenge Blog - Step Up Your Stencil (use a stencil and embellish it); and Simon Says Stamp Wednesday Challenge - Stamp It In STAMPtember (use a stamp).

I used the Gina K. Designs (GKD) Ornamental Fans stencil and added GKD Faded Brick, Sweet Mango, and Honey Mustard ink with a blending brush.

I stamped the sentiment, from the GKD The Best Flowers stamp set, with Warm Cocoa ink, using my MISTI. I then stamped it again, with VersaMark ink, and heat embossed it with a Tinsel Vintage Mahogany embossing powder.

I added a strip of cardstock along the edge of the stenciled area with GKD Connect Glue, and to embellish my stencil, I added dots of Ranger Glossy Accents.

Thanks for stopping by!

September Scor-Pal Challenge

It's time for another Scor-Pal challenge! Where did August go? This month, the theme is School, or Storage. You can choose to follow the theme, or make an Anything Goes project.

Each month we will have a different theme and you will have a month to create and enter your projects. As well as the theme, you will need to make "More Than One Score" and tell us where you used the Scor-Pal on your project. So a single fold card won't count, but an Easel, Gatefold, Stair Step, etc will :) Also we love to see your "Anything But a Card" projects, just as long as you make "More Than One Score".

I chose to make some card storage boxes. I saw these on Pinterest, and followed the instructions on Lana's blog.

For each card holder, you will need:

One 8 1/2" x 11" piece of cardstock. You will want it to be a heavy weight cardstock. (I used 120 lb               Accent Opaque Digital Cover White Smooth)
One 3" x 7" piece of cardstock
One 2 5/8" x 11" piece of patterned paper (I used Recollections Garden Florals paper pack)
If you have 12" patterned paper, you can use that, and it will go all the way to the back of each side.

Embellishments to decorate (I used Gina K. Designs stamps from Sweet Camellia, Stamper's Favorites and Layered Daisies stamp sets).

Here are the templates for the two pieces of cardstock. The instructions will be underneath.

Starting with the 8 1/2" x 11" piece of cardstock, place the 11" side at the top of your Scor-Pal, and score at 4 1/2" and 6 1/2".  Turn the cardstock so the 8 1/2" side is at the top, and score at 2".

On the 11" side, with the 2" score line at the bottom, make a mark at 1 3/4" and 9 1/4". On the 4 1/2" and 6 1/2" score lines, measure down 3 5/8" and make a mark. Join these two marks, and then on each side, join this mark to the mark at the top. Cut away this part, and cut from the bottom along the score lines, up to the 2" score line. It should look like this.

Crease all the score lines, and add Scor-Tape to the bottom center and right hand flaps. This will be the front of your card holder.

Next, take the 3" x 7" piece, and score at 1/2" on the two long sides and one short side. Cut up from the short side along the score lines to the horizontal score line.

Crease along the score line, add Scor-Tape to the two small tabs, and fold inwards to attach to the larger flap and make a box with three sides. This will be the back of your card holder.

Add Scor-Tape to the three sides of the back. Referring to the pictures below, attach the back, one side at a time, lining up with the score line of the front piece. You also need to attach the bottom flaps on the front piece.

Here is the card holder so far.

Now you can add the patterned paper. I scored mine at 4 1/2" and 6 1/2". Since my paper was only 11", it didn't go all the way to the back. If you are using 12" paper, you might not need to score it. You can just wrap it around, starting at the back of one side and creasing at the corners. You can either cut off the excess, or wrap it around to the back of the holder.

Then you can embellish it how you like. I added the type of cards I will put in each holder. Each card holder measures 4 1/2" by 6 1/2" and is 2" wide. In my first picture, at the top of the page, I added a slimline card that is actually a Christmas card, but I just wanted to show what a slimline card looks like in the holder.

I may end up making a few more of these to store some of my other types of cards.

I hope you will be inspired to make something for the challenge. It runs all month, and you might win a prize!
